Tattoo & Body Piercing Establishments

The Athens City-County Health Department currently grants approval to and inspects tattoo and/or body piercing establishments. These establishments are given approval in accordance with Section 3701-9 of the Ohio Administrative Code and Chapters 3730.01 to 3730.11 of the Ohio Revised Code.

Section 3730.02 of the Ohio Revised Code states no person shall "operate a business that offers tattooing or body piercing services unless a Board of Health has approved the business under Section 3730.03."

Persons seeking approval to operate a business offering tattooing body piercing or tattooing and body piercing services shall apply to the Board of Health of the city or general health district in which the business is located, on forms the board shall prescribe and provide.

Some items the board of health may require before granting approval are that the artist shows proof of proper training in the following areas:

• First Aid
• Safety & sanitation requirements for the prevention & transmission of infectious diseases
• Universal precaution against blood borne pathogens
• Appropriate tattoo and piercing after care
